Chapter Ash-Shams (91)

Look at the weird tale of Allah’s “She-Camel” (Naaqatullah) and “the thirst it quenches” (wa suqyaa-ha), and then “its slaughter” (‘aqaroo-ha) by the community of Thamud! This is the nonsense we have inherited from old times in our traditional interpretations of the Quran. And look also at the conclusion of the Chapter emphasizing razing of the community of Thamud to the ground; and then check and analyze as to how beautifully these wishful fallacies have been removed in the most comprehensible and rational way in the latest attempt to purify the Quran from fiction.

Transliteration: “Wash-Shamsi, wa dhuhaa-ha; wa alqamari izaa talaa-ha; wa annahaari izaa jallaa-ha; wa allayili izaa yaghsha-ha; was samaai wa maa banaa-ha; wal Ardhi wa maa tahaa-ha; wa nafsin wa maa sawwa-ha; fa alhama-ha fujura-ha wa taqwa-ha; qad aflaha man zakkaa-ha. Wa qad khaaba man dassaa-ha. Kazzabat Thamudu bi-taghwaa-ha; iz amba’atha ashqaa-ha; fa-qaala la-hum Rasool-ul-laahi naaqat-al-laahi wa suqyaa-ha. Fa-kazzabu-hu fa-‘aqaroo-ha, fa-damdama ‘alyi-him Rabbu-hum bi-zambi-him, fa-sawwa-ha. Wa laa yakhaafu ‘uqbaa-ha.”

Old Traditionist Translation:

“By the sun and its heat and brightness, and by the moon as it follows it; and by the day as it displays the sun’s glory, and by the night as it envelopes the sun; and by the sky and by Him Who made it; and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: He who purifies it will prosper, and he who suppresses it will be ruined. In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie when their arch-criminal rose up in rage. Then Allah’s Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!” But they rejected his statement as a lie and hamstrung the she-camel. For that crime their Lord rumbled down upon them, utterly razing them to the ground. He has no fear of its sequel.”

The latest Academic and Rational Translation:

91:1-15 “Witness and observe the Sun and its brightness, and the moon as it follows it; and the day as it appears in its glory; and the night as it takes over and conceals it; and observe the Universe and the wisdom that has created it; and the Earth and the process which caused it to stretch and expand; and observe also the human self and how admirably it was proportioned/composed(maa sawwa-ha – ما سوّاھا); that it was imbued with the elements of its own disintegration as well as its own stability & evolution. Hence, those who were able to evolve it, attained ripeness and prosperity; and those who have suppressed its potentialities, faced decline. The community of Thamud chose the way of falsity due to their excessive pride. When their most wretched ones (ashqaa-ha – اشقاھا) were made to rise in defiance (ambatha – انبعث), then Allah’s Messenger spoke to them of what was the best and most admirable Conduct ordained by Allah (naqatullah – ناقۃ اللہ), and what knowledge and inspiration it filled people with (suqya-ha – سقیاھا). They denied its truth and prevented it from spreading (‘aqaroo-ha – عقروھا). Subsequently, their Nourisher showed His anger to them (damdama ‘alayi-him – دمدم علیھم) for this crime on their part, and thereafter firmly established His Discipline (sawwa-ha – سوّاھا) over them. He is never afraid of repeated endeavors leading to the success of His Discipline/ideology (‘uqbaa-ha – عُقباھا).”
